The acting isn't crash hot either from two of the leads. They add nothing and prove to be an unwanted distraction from the gripping main storyline that is in place. There are about three or four of them in here, including one that almost reminded me of a scene from the Are You Right There, Father Ted? episode of, erm, Father Ted. It does have a tendency to throw in plot points that are completely unnecessary and, as it turns out, add absolutely nothing to the film once it has finished. It's masterful stuff and quite sublimely paced as well. All of a sudden it flips the story to focusing on an entirely different character, feeds in to a lot of what we see and hear before it flips, and also sheds light on the intentions of another character that would have been extremely hard to spot beforehand. But really, this film does not go anywhere that you expect after just under halfway in.
A man's girlfriend has disappeared after dumping him and, with the police suspecting that he might have something to do with her disappearance, his new girlfriend also starts to be concerned that all is not as it seems. What it does expertly is arm itself with a basic plot that has formed the backbone of many supposedly similar thrillers in the past.
It's far from perfect and drifts towards a predictably 'some will love it, some will hate it' ending that also leaves a couple of plot strands hanging (I wouldn't imagine a sequel is in the offing, unfortunately) but if you go into this film armed only with the basic synopsis they had on Netflix US for this, then you are in for a treat. It would be a shame to miss out on The Hidden Face as well, because it really is a very nicely crafted suspense thriller. It makes you wonder what kind of idiot put this together. It reveals two massive plot points, leaving it with almost no twists for you to discover. This one is so amazingly misjudged in terms of the amount it reveals that it genuinely renders watching the whole film completely pointless. Having just watched the trailer after seeing the film, they're absolutely right.
Most of the reviews that I have read of The Hidden Face since I've watched it have screamed "DON'T WATCH THE FRIGGIN' TRAILER!" or words to that effect.
